Seedtime And Harvest
In Isaiah 55, God says that His ways are not our ways. He further describes His ways as seedtime and harvest, a process of planting seeds and expecting a harvest. This process is repeated throughout the Bible and is a fundamental law, commitment, covenant, promise of God. Seedtime and harvest is first mentioned in Genesis 8:22 While the earth remains there will be seedtime and harvest. Also in Genesis 1:28 and 9:7 mankind was told to be fruitful and multiply. God is a God of multiplication. If you plant an orange seed, God grows an orange tree. He calls it giving seed for the sower (farmer). When you, the sower, plant the seeds produced by the orange tree, God produces an orange orchard. Your seed is multiplied! In America we have a saying that you reap what you sow. This is a Biblical teaching. Galatians 6 states clearly that you reap what you sow. If you sow friendship by being friendly to people, you will reap a harvest of many friends. God will multiply your friendship seed! We are to love others, encourage others, and give to others and we will receive a harvest of love, encouragement, and gifts. Jesus said in Luke 6:38 that when
we give "it" shall be give unto us in abundance. This Scriptures
also says that "men" will give unto us in abundance. The
Kingdome of God is like a sower sowing seeds and receiving a harvest. So,
we are to be constantly giving away things, money, love, our time (the
"it" in Luke 6:38) and receiving a multiplied
harvest of "it". This harvest is God giving us additional
"seed for the sower". Seedtime and harvest is God's Word and
God's Word provides the "seed for the sower". How does this process work? Jesus describes it in Mark 4. Our responsibility is to sow (to give) and to reap the harvest. It is not our responsibility to cause the seed to germinate and to grow into the harvest. That is God's responsibility. We are to be looking for the harvest and recognize the harvest when it comes. When a farmer sows orange seeds he recognizes an orange tree when it is full grown. One key to recognizing your harvest is to "name your seed". When you give something away, name it by saying "Father God, I name this seed that I am planting "seed for friends for my children" or "a good car for my wife" or whatever harvest you are expecting. There is always time between the planting of seed and the harvest of the crop. When your seed has been named you can be looking for the harvest and give credit to God when the harvest comes. He is the Lord of the harvest. Other seedtime and harvest scriptures:
Isaiah 55:6 Seek the LORD while he may
be found; call on him while he is near. 8 "For my thoughts are
not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD . 9
"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your
ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and
making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed
for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes
out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I
desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Galatians 6:7 Be
not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also
reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the
flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap
life everlasting. 9 And let us not be weary in well
doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10 As
we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them
who are of the household of faith. Luke 6:38 Give,
and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and
running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it
will be measured to you." Mark 4: 26He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come." 30Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. 32Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade." 33With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
